The 49ers are the new Jets

Playoff Predictions, Power Rankings, Week 7 Picks

Under coach Jim Harbaugh, the 49ers have hit their stride and now, at 5-1, have a stranglehold on the NFC West. The way that Harbaugh has turned San Francisco around is a little similar to the formula the New York Jets have used the last two years: smash mouth football. With quarterback Alex Smith, the 49ers are limited with that they could accomplish offensively. Harbaugh has managed what he asks Smith to do and has not allowed him to lose games for the team as he's done so well in the past. The game is placed in the hands of running backs Frank Gore, Kendall Hunter and the stingy 49er defense. You saw evidence of this in the Philly and Detroit games, when despite trailing they struck to their run game, having faith their defense could keep the game close. Both times they were right, and both times they came back and won the game. The Niners know that they cannot throw the ball around the field and because they know and abide by their limitations, they've been winning. Still, don't think Harbuagh has been able to turn Alex Smith around, if they re-sign him next year they will be in trouble. Until they find a quarterback that will allow them to open up their offense, they won't go far. Just ask the New York Jets.
