C's Hang on to Keep Streak Alive: BOS 105 NYK 101

This article was originally published for CelticsLife.com

Paul Pierce scored 25 points on 9/20 shooting as the Celtics got their 9th straight home victory over the New York Knicks, 105-101.

Kevin Garnett fouled out of the game in the fourth quarter but scored 24 points on 12/17 shooting.

Despite turning the ball over 18 times (11 in the first half) the Celtics were able to come away with a W. They were largely helped by their extreme rebounding advantage, 54-38. Pierce (14), Garnett (10) and Rondo (10) led the team in that category.

Rondo recorded a triple double with 10 points, 24 assists and 10 rebounds. Rondo's 24 assists is a career high and equaled the New York Knicks' team total.

Big Baby came up big off the bench, scoring 16 points on 7/12 shooting but fouled out of the game near the end of the fourth.

The Knicks' $100 Million dollar man, Amar'e Stoudemire, had 27 points on 8/16 shooting with 5 fouls. Stoudemire had a chance to pull the Knicks within 1 with the final seconds ticking away but had the ball stolen by Marquis Daniels.

Jermaine O'Neal, who only clocked 25 minutes in the first two games, was inactive for tonight's contest with a sore left knee. Rookie 2nd round draft pick, Luke Harangody, suited up in his place.

The Knicks refused to go down easy, rallying from a double digit deficit in the third quarter to stay within sniffing distance after cutting Boston's lead to three with a Wilson Chandler three-pointer. However, Ray Allen's quick 5 points to start the 4th quarter helped the Celtics again widen the gap to as much as 10. Surviving a last second run by New York that saw them pull within two, the C's held on 105-101, after Marquis Daniels stole the game clinching ball with 5 seconds left.

At the start of the game, Boston looked sloppy - turning the ball over on their first four possessions. The C's went the first three minutes before getting their first basket on what was only their second shot to that point.

CSNNE's A. Sherrod Blakely pointed out that it seemed they were attempting to be too unselfish, making the "extra extra pass". This was no more evident than on a fast break in the first quarter when Rondo passed to Pierce who then passed back to Rondo who then passed to Ray Allen who missed the shot. The Celtics looked out of sync at times, ruining many potential highlights. Despite continued sloppy play in the second, Boston still held the lead heading into half time, 50-46.

The Celtics improve to 2-1 and don't play again until Tuesday November 2nd at Detroit.
